Merer, a newfound overseer of this pyramid’s construction, is suddenly making headlines, thousands of years later. His “firsthand
record” of the construction process, written on a
papyrus scroll, was recently discovered.
It tells of an elaborate canal system, locks and all, using water diverted from the Nile. Blocks of
limestone, weighing 2.5 tons each, were ferried from the quarry site “eight miles away at Tura” along these canals to Giza.
Merer the Overseer is now famous, with perhaps more fans than Pharaoh Khufu.
Merer, however, gets no fancy tomb. Not
even a body wrap. The brain and hands that enlivened his papyrus scroll have long since dissolved into history’s mist.
