In one of Manhattan’s ritziest neighborhoods, “an elaborate inlaid marble mosaic from one of [Caligula’s] ceremonial ships” served as a coffee table for decades.
When Italy’s Art Recovery Unit recently stepped in to reclaim it, the current owner was disgruntled.
Helen Fioratti, an antiques dealer, claimed that her purchase of the opulent piece was “completely innocent” (unlike its original owner). She and her
husband had paid
thousands of dollars for it.
Nevertheless, the rare artifact was “seized by the Manhattan district attorney’s office” and “formally handed back to the Italians.” It will soon be proudly displayed in a museum, so that all the world can see such monstrous beauty.
