Insect 'Armageddon': Why we should care

Sure, bees sting and bugs bite, but they do a lot more than just that.  In fact, they play a key role in keeping humans alive.

After finding a more than 75 percent drop in Germany’s insect population during the past 20 years, lead researcher Dave Goulson has deemed this to be an “ecological Armageddon.” Rather than trumpeting angels, think buzzing beetles.

What has contributed to this sharp decline?  Goulson’s study points to “climate change, pesticides, and agricultural practices.”  The good news is that “man-made” causes can become “man-made” solutions.  If we act quickly on this wake-up call, there’s still time to reverse the deadly trend.

If not, Earth’s food chain could be in dire distress.  Goulson explains that “insects are food for most birds and fish, and bats, they’re kind of central to everything [including the pollination of our own crops].”  We are destroying God’s beautiful Creation, wing by delicate wing.  That can sting way more than bees in the end.
