Just One Dime

1894-S Barber Dime  (Photo by Professional Coin Grading Service)
A dime is usually worth 10 cents, but an 1894-S Barber recently sold for $1.32 million.

Because only nine of these are still known to exist, this particular one has been making the celebrity rounds.  It was once owned by Jerry Buss of the Los Angeles Lakers, and is now owned by Dell Loy Hansen of the Real Salt Lake Major League Soccer team.

What is it that makes this dime so valuable?  Just think of what $1.32 million could otherwise purchase…

And how many pockets has it idled within since 1894?  Who could have suspected back then that it would one day garner more than a million bucks?
