Lunar Tardigrades

Water Bear  (Photo by Goldstein & Madden)
Forget the man in the moon.  More likely, we’re talking tardigrades.

Which are what?

Also known as “water bears,” these cute little critters cannot be seen with the naked eye.  Microscopes reveal them to have “tubby bodies,” complete with “eight legs” and what look like “hands” at the end of each.

Better yet, they’re virtually “indestructible.”  When times get tough, they simply “shrivel up into a tiny ball” and wait it out. This ability will serve them well on the moon.

But how did they get there?

Tardigrades, along with human DNA, were part of Israel’s recent lunar mission.  When Beresheet crash landed, the tardigrades may have gone into survival mode.  This means that thousands are awaiting a return ticket to Earth. Or perhaps they prefer to remain within a more stable world…
