Astronomic hole in one

Here's looking at you!    (EHT Image of M87's Black Hole)
Scientists scored big when they finally captured the image of a galactic black hole.  This particular hole is located at the center of Messier 87 (M87), in the Virgo Cluster “more than 50 million light years from Earth.”

One telescope could not have accomplished such a feat.  The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) managed to because it synchronizes eight instruments from around the world.  Its partnering telescopes are located in Spain, Mexico, Chile, Arizona, Hawaii and the South Pole.

As previously depicted artistically, the gaping image looks like “a circle of black, surrounded by bright streams of superheated material swirling around the shadow.”  As time progresses, telescopic imagery is bound to become even clearer and more detailed.
