Me Too vs. We Two

The Stolen Kiss   (by Jean-Honore Fragonard, 1786)
The #MeToo movement, while exposing some actual predators, has the potential to go horribly awry.

It seems as though disgruntled members of consensual relationships are now jumping on the #MeToo bandwagon.  Before “he said/she said” accusations can be justly sorted out, lives have been publicly trashed.

Differences in perception are often at the root of anger regarding sexual experiences.  Males and females generally receive very different messages about what constitutes “good sex.”  Neither tends to be real adept at reading each other’s signals.

Social commentator Glenn Sacks believes that #MeToo “is lumping the trivial mistakes or misdeeds of the many in with the genuinely awful actions of a handful.”  However, concepts of “trivial” and “awful” vary widely.

Perhaps stopgaps can be put into place so that public shaming cannot as easily result in personal and professional destruction.  Although free speech is vitally important, so is “innocent until proven guilty.”
