Who'll Be Coming 'Round What Mountain?

The Last Judgment    (Michelangelo, 1541 AD)
She'll Be Coming‘Round the Mountain is usually thought of as a fun campfire song.  However, its history is not all that jolly.

This traditional song is “derived from a Christian hymn  known as When the Chariot Comes.”  The Chariot refers to how Christ will appear during His anticipated Second Coming.  The tune was especially popular within Appalachia during the 19th-century, hence an emphasis on mountains.

Now if you’ve been minding your Ps and Qs, an impending Rapture sounds good.  If not, you’d better watch out!  Santa might not be the only one coming to town.
