Gaga: Lady and Woman

For a long time, Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta has dubbed herself “Lady.”  She is now emphasizing that this also means “Woman.”

In a Harper’s Bazaar essay, Germanotta explained that she was originally named after her aunt.  Aunt Joanne (after whom Lady Gaga’s latest album is titled) was a sexual-assault victim who died at a relatively young age.

Gaga furthermore stated:  The album is about having endurance and heart no matter how hard things get, and about being unafraid to really look into your heart and how you feel.

This is essentially Lady Gaga’s definition of womanhood:  being tough, yet vulnerable.
