Five Amarna Letters (Photo by Osama Shukir Muhammed Amin) |
Archaeologists have recently discovered that the dagger he was buried with was made from a meteorite. Its iron content has an out-of-this-world octahedrite pattern. Tutankhamun lived before the advent of Earth’s own iron age, which initially raised suspicion about the dagger's origin.
The Amarna letters suggest that the king may have inherited this artifact from his grandfather, Amenhotep III. Perhaps it was an heirloom gift from “the Anatolian king of Mitanni,” whose daughter Amenhotep had married.
