Love Those Baby Blues

During and after World War II, an especially popular song began like this:  “Five foot two, eyes of blue…  Has anybody seen my girl?”

Baby blues have long been heralded by humans.  But it turns out that robins love them too.  Not in eyes, mind you, but in eggs.

The bluer a robin’s egg, the more likely it is that there’s a healthy chick within.  Male robins sense this, and therefore prioritize the protection of such wee ones.
