Life can show up in the strangest places, with none more strange than the clouds over Venus.
Scientists recently detected phosphine within the atmosphere of our planetary neighbor. This phosphorus/hydrogen bonded molecule is one that’s been associated with microbes living in “oxygen-poor environments.” Could it be that they’re snuggling in Venus’ steamy aura?
The hellish conditions on said planet might deter some less hardy critters. Venus’ surface can easily bake pizza, and its atmosphere primarily contains sulfuric acid. Yet thermophilic bacteria have been known to survive other toasty conditions, so why not these?
