2012 Berkeley Celebration (Photo by Quinn Dombrowski) |
Christopher
Columbus was somewhat a
product of his times and not totally evil. However,
it cannot be overlooked that he committed
many despicable crimes against humanity.
It
therefore seems fitting to celebrate indigenous peoples
rather than their erstwhile perpetrator. As
Oami Amarasingham, Advocacy Director of
ACLU Maine, stated: It’s time to stop
celebrating a man whose arrival
brought death, disease and slavery to hundreds of thousands, and start honoring the people who lived here long before.
Maine
and Vermont recently transformed Columbus
Day into Indigenous Peoples’ Day.
They’ve now joined the growing number
of places on board with this: Minnesota,
Alaska, Oregon, South Dakota,
San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver
and Phoenix, to name a few.
