They quit
lumbering around the North
American continent about 11,700 years
ago. Many ended up in the
stomachs of hungry humans. Telltale tracks in the sands of New
Mexico reveal ancient
footprints in hot pursuit of ancient
paw prints.
These
paw prints are “almost two feet
long… and a foot wide.” Such
kidney-shaped paws supported sloths the
size of bisons. One huge catch would
have therefore provided “about 612,000
calories” worth of finger food.
