Elizabethan Arm (circa 1575 CE) |
Aadeel Akhtar,
founder of “a startup company that
develops low-cost bionic arms,” is working
hard to correct this. His team at
the University of Illinois has come up
with a setup which sends “mild electrical
feedback that stimulates nerves.”
This has
been done before, but not in a reliable
fashion. Akhtar’s model “works even when
the electrodes begin to peel off or sweat
builds up.” Users have reported satisfactory
results, even after vigorous activities.
Akhtar’s
stated goal is to develop “a prosthetic
hand that becomes an extension of the body.”
