June 1963 Eruption (Photo by USGS) |
Earlier
today, the Big Island’s “Kilauea volcano
spewed ash nearly six miles… into the
air.” Sulfur dioxide levels were spiking, to
the extent that schools were forced to
close within a village 25 miles away. Lava has already destroyed 37 nearby homes.
The aptly
named village of Volcano is expected to
receive a wide “dusting of ash.” Masks are therefore being handed out by
civil-defense crew members.
Volcanologists
are hoping that spurts like today’s will
relieve enough pressure to keep all hell
from breaking loose.
