Riches to Rags

King Midas  (1893 illustration)
King Midas wound up starving to death, and “70% of lottery winners end up broke.”  Money is not the root of all evil, but avarice certainly can be.

When Roger Griffiths won the equivalent of 2.5 million U.S. dollars in the UK National Lottery, he didn’t sock it away. Griffiths instead loaded up on “designer clothes, luxury cars… [and] extravagant vacations.”  When the money ran out, so did his marriage.  He “now lives alone in a small cottage.”

Sweet sixteen seemed all the sweeter when young Callie Rogers received her windfall.  She went from “supermarket checkout girl” to life in the fast lane.  By the time she was a jaded lady of 20-something, her nest egg had cracked wide open.

The story of Ronnie Music, Jr. is sadder yet.  Rather than investing his winnings in stocks and bonds, he bet on crystal meth.  He now lives in a big house with all the other inmates.
