Solomon's Color Purple

Angelic Purple   (from the "Resurrection of Christ" by Raphael)

The color purple has long symbolized that which is extraordinary.

It was no different in biblical times.  The Song of Songs alludes to the royal significance of this hue during Solomon’s reign.  This wise king’s carriage was imbued with purple upholstery.

We’ve grown used to purple these days.  Violet lenses now mimic Elizabeth Taylor’s God-given irises. And no such look is complete without hair shades to match.  But back in the day, purple dye was a rare commodity.  So rare that it was worth more than gold.

So lasting that 3,000 years later, a purple fragment of material was discovered “south of Jerusalem.”  Its brilliant color had been derived from the “body of mollusks” and had retained its beauty throughout the ages.
