Inching toward Inclusion

It isn’t the finish line, but it’s a step in the right direction. 

Pope Francis recently amended church law so that women can take a more active role during Roman Catholic Mass.  They are now allowed to serve as lectors who “read Scripture” and as altar-based “eucharistic ministers.”

Although women still cannot become priests, the Pope has commissioned “experts to study whether [they] could be deacons.”  Deacons perform many priestly functions at funerals, weddings, etc.  Women have served in this capacity during early church history.
