Colorful stockings not just for Christmas

Although we really don’t know how the tradition of Christmas stockings began, we do know that the original ones were fairly plain.  In fact, children's everyday socks would double as holiday specials.

Over time, Christmas stockings became more and more ornate. Some are now positively posh.  But not all ritzy socks end up on mantles and bedposts.  Many had been known to grace the feet of George Herbert Walker Bush.

When President Bush became confined to a wheelchair, his ankles were then highly visible. Rather than mourn his plight, Bush decided to liven things up with some fashion statements.

He declared himself to be a “sock man,” and began “to sport an array of colorful socks with a perfect pattern for each occasion.”  In honor of his wife’s many contributions to the field of literacy, Bush wore “socks decorated with books” at her funeral.
