Obama to Trump: It's up to us

(Public Domain)
Just before leaving office, Barack Obama sent Donald Trump a handwritten note.  It’s contents stressed the need for responsible leadership.

Reminding Trump from the get-go that “millions have placed their hopes in you,” Obama wished him well.  After all, “expanded prosperity and security” during Trump’s “tenure” could mean goodness for everyone.

So what advice did Obama have to offer?  Ostensibly, none.  Explaining that each term is “unique… without a clear blueprint for success,” the 44th president nevertheless passed on some “reflections” to the 45th.

Within these reflections was a recurring theme:  “It’s up to us.”  Obama emphasized that presidents who are “blessed… with great good fortune” must strive to ensure “ladders of success” for other deserving people.  He also said that it is “up to us” to nurture American democracy and sustain “international order.”

Yes, it is up to us.

All of us.
