Leslie Van Houten: In the name of family

1999 Mug Shot  (Public Domain)
It’s amazing to what lengths people will go to protect a family.  And it’s astonishing how far people will go to obtain one.

Leslie Van Houten, the youngest member of Charles Manson’s makeshift “family,” took her quest for a “tribe” in a tragic direction.  Devastated by her parents’ divorce, Van Houten sought salvation in substitute scenarios.

This former “homecoming princess” was then coming home to a devilish situation.  She viewed Manson as the ultimate father figure, right up there with Jesus.  Because she believed so strongly in Manson, she also believed the madness he spewed.

Humans seem hardwired for family life.  Yet wires can sometimes get horribly crossed.  False idols are then mistaken for gods.

Had Leslie looked in other directions, she could have found the love she craved.  Perhaps she still might.  Forgiveness is a powerful force, way more powerful than evil.
