What about Wat?

In Thailand, “wat” means “temple.”   "Wat Thamkrabok" literally means “Temple of the Bamboo Cave.”

This Buddhist temple has become a refuge for addicts attempting to kick the drug habit.  Monk Jeremy, who successfully underwent treatment there three years ago, vouches for its effectiveness.  He states:  Here we have a particular way to practice Buddhism, and it fits very well with the treatment of drug addiction.

The treatment routine includes such things as herbally induced vomiting, meditation, semi-isolation, manual labor, steam baths, table tennis and weight lifting.

Some come as a last resort.  Henry, a British heroin addict who had tried “several traditional rehab clinics” before arriving at Wat Thamkrabok, explained:  For many of us here, this is our last chance.
