Hunger is No Crime

Feeding Multitudes  (Bernardo Strozzi)
Not content with Peter’s first two responses, Jesus asked him a third time: Do you love me?

John 21 tells us that that Peter answered:  Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.  Jesus simply replied:  Feed my sheep.

This was not the first time that Jesus equated feeding the hungry with love.  Shortly before, He had urged Peter:  Feed my lambs.  Not to mention the miracle of loaves and fishes, which was important enough to appear in all four Gospels.

It should therefore come as no surprise that “Italy’s top criminal court has ruled that a hungry homeless man who took a package of hot dogs from a supermarket committed no crime.”

This decision was positively reinforced by a Turin journalist, who reminded readers that “in a civilized country not even the worst of men can die of hunger.”
