Aside
from the challenges of zooming from
one world to another, there are daunting health issues. One is particularly
crucial: the effect that radiation
has upon brain cells.
While
on Earth, people are largely shielded
from cosmic radiation by the
planet’s “atmosphere and magnetic
field.” Once beyond this buffer, astronauts would be
bombarded by “energetic particles”
that are “thought to be
the remnants of supernovae.”
They
would also be hit with ejections
from our nearest star, the
Sun. Sun-tan lotion just won’t
do the trick, and scientists have
thus far been unable to come up with sufficient
protection from the cosmic particles
that mess with neurons and
damage DNA.
