The
actual Amazon rain forest is burning. When French President Emmanuel
Macron called this an “acute
emergency,” Brazilian President
Jair Bolsonaro essentially
told
him to mind his own business.
But
this is the whole world’s business, rather
than just a “colonial mindset” as Bolsonaro
likes to think. The rain forest is
“a vital carbon” storehouse for all of Planet
Earth. If it goes down, it’s very likely
we all go down.
The
G7 summit is coming up soon. Macron
and German Chancellor Angela
Merkel are calling for this crisis
to be on the agenda. Many have
linked the fires to Bolsonaro’s lack
of environmental protection. He
has allegedly “encouraged loggers
and farmers to clear the
[rainforest] land.”
