Because the risks are so high, there should be some real good reasons for colonizing Mars.
According to Elon Musk, there are. Humans can’t necessarily count upon Earth as their only home base.
Suppose there’s a nuclear war? Or a giant
asteroid hit? Then what? If humans were already an interplanetary
species, at least some would likely survive.
Nevertheless, it’s difficult to get people enthused via scare tactics.
Musk has a far more compelling rationale for Space X endeavors. He points
out that settling Mars would be “an incredible adventure,” one more inspiring than any other he “can possibly imagine.”
Musk concludes: Life needs to be more than just solving
problems every day.
