Bob Dylan: Who would've thought?

Back in the day, Bob Dylan was deemed ignoble by the powers that be.  But The Times They Are A-Changin’, and he has now been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Just goes to show:  With enough skill and fortitude, today’s pariah can become tomorrow’s hero.

Choosing a singer-songwriter for this prize seems a radical departure from the academy’s usual picks.  Nevertheless, Academy Secretary Sara Danius explains that Dylan’s combination of poetry and song is “no different from the ancient Greeks, whose works were often performed to music.”

Unlike previous occasions during which he was mercilessly jeered, Dylan was met at the Swedish Academy’s headquarters with “a loud cheer as his name was read out.”  Positively Stockholm is sounding a lot more upbeat than Positively Fourth Street.
