Hollywood Mammoths

Nowadays...    (Photo by Jared Ziegers)
When the public thinks “Hollywood Mammoths,” names like Elizabeth Taylor and Cary Grant come to mind.

But in those hallowed hills lie mammoths of another kind:  fossilized ones.   A team of archaeologists recently discovered “a treasure trove” of bones from Hollywood’s ancient past.

During the Ice Age, mastodons, bison and giant sloths roamed the terrain of what is now Los Angeles.  Their fossils have been found “about 25 feet below the shops of Beverly Hills.”  Many became trapped in tar pits which still seep “black ooze… from the ground.”

When the dig reached down 80 feet, whale bones were uncovered.  That’s because LA’s fabled streets were once at the ocean’s bottom.
