Within
just a few decades, the average annual
rainfall in Central Chile has dropped by half. This, coupled with
extravagant
water usage by avocado farmers
and land developers, has resulted
in the disappearance of Lake
Aculeo.
Once
a thriving tourist attraction and
respite from the busy streets of
nearby Santiago, Aculeo is now nothing
but “crusty earth and spindly, dried
shrubs.” Gone are the “busy lakeside
restaurants” and numerous happy
campers.
Can
this happen in other drought-prone
locations? It’s a pretty sure bet.
