On
the one hand, the Bible is thought of
as a literary and historical text. On the
other hand, it is a religious scripture. If
taught strictly as the former, would implications
still exist as the latter?
This
is the question being asked as Missouri
and other states consider adding
Bible coursework to public school
curricula. Supporters point “to
the Bible’s significance to global history
and Western values.” Opponents state
that the Bible is primarily a spiritual scripture
that emphasizes certain religions over
others.
Even
some fervent Christians have joined the
opposition. Baptist pastor Brian Kaylor has
stated: The Bible cannot be reduced to merely an elective high school
class. The Bible is inherently religious, and we
cannot pretend otherwise.
