Alzheimer's cure? Unblocking obstacles

(Painting by Honore Daumier)
When sculpting an elephant, it seems necessary to remove that which is not the elephant.  When retrieving memories, it seems necessary to remove that which is clouding them.

A groundbreaking study published in Cell Reports explains that “MIT researchers have successfully reversed memory loss in mice… by blocking the enzyme HDAC2, which interferes with genes associated with memory.”

The study’s lead author, Li-Huei Tsai, is therefore seeking ways to inhibit HDAC2 activity or reduce HDAC2 levels.  Tsai hopes that such methods can “restore long-term memory in humans, too.”

“Unblocking” techniques can also be used to enhance wisdom.  Stephen and Ondrea Levine have explained:  “We don’t need to do anything to be more loving except let go of what blocks the natural luminescence of the heart.”  These blockages include stubborn “fears and desires.”
