Nevertheless, intelligence is known to exist within brainless life forms. Slime molds, which look like blobs of goo, are capable of finding “the fastest route through a maze or between points.” People
have difficulty doing the same without their trusty GPS devices.
These molds didn’t lose their nerve, they simply had none to begin with. Even so, they manage to pass acquired adaptations along to one another. This ability
indicates that “learning may predate the evolution of the nervous system.”
Some even suspect that consciousness predates evolution itself.
