What a Waste

Lake Qaraoun   (Photo by Fouad Awada)
When hundreds of dead fish washed up from Lebanon’s Lake Qaraoun, people began wondering why.

Some theorized that a virus was to blame.  Others pointed to the vast amount of toxic waste that’s been dumped into this reservoir for years.  Such pollutants include pesticides, fertilizers and industrial wastes.

Although fishing for human consumption has been banned there since 2018, “fish from the lake have continued to appear in several markets.”  Uh oh...  Sounds all too familiar.
