Not so at Parker County Prison in Texas. As a stricken guard lay there dying, nearby inmates broke out of their cell. Rather than run for the nearest escape route, they instead began yelling and kicking doors.
Their goal was to “get the attention of other guards on duty,” hoping to save the dying man’s life.
This was certainly a risky venture for the inmates. Additional
guards might have arrived with guns drawn.
All’s well that ends well, however. The inmates were returned to their cells unharmed, and the heart-attack victim was revived with a defibrillator. This story could have had a far different ending if the inmates had not risked it all to “love thy enemy.”
