Hot Rain, Hard Rain

Death Valley  (Photo by Photographersnature)
Back in 1962, Bob Dylan wrote and recorded a song called “A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall.”

The lyrics are filled with haunting images such as this:  I’ve been out in front of a dozen dead oceans.  California abuts an ocean that’s becoming more and more polluted.  The Pacific has become so defiled that parts of it are known as garbage patches and trash vortices.

Now the hard rain is also a hot rain.  On July 24, 2018 a new record was set, but not one to celebrate.  Death Valley (appropriately named) reached 127⁰ F.  Rain began in the Imperial Valley while the temps were still at 119⁰ F, thus marking the “hottest rain in world history.”

If this keeps up, other images from Dylan’s song might soon predominate.  A Death Valley denizen has already reported that this rain “felt hard” and “made it difficult to breathe.”
