Batter Up

Numbat on the Move   (Photo by Martin Pot)
There are baseball bats and then there are numbats, the latter of which is being honored today.

It’s World Numbat Day, not to be ignored by animal lovers the world over. Yet chances are you’ve never seen one.  There are less than a thousand of them left, and most hang back in the wilds of Western Australia.

If you happen to be there too, keep your eyes peeled for a marsupial that resembles a cross between a raccoon and a squirrel.  Numbats are out and about during the day, hunting down their favorite snack: termites.  This habit of theirs is especially popular with homeowners in the region.
