Mountain elk picks Pickens

Eastern Elk     (Public Domain)
After 300 years, the mountain elk has finally returned to Pickens County, South Carolina.

This could mean that the human population will soon proliferate in those parts because the elk has been traditionally associated with fertility.

But perhaps not...  The Lakota believed “that the mythical or spiritual elk, not the physical one, was the teacher of men and the embodiment of strength, sexual prowess and courage.”

Pickens County wildlife authorities are at least hoping for a resurgence of elk.  Thus far, just one lone male has been spotted in the area.  If he finds himself a female mate, then this could be a whole new beginning for South Carolina elks.
