Saint Matthew's 'Day Job'

Saint Matthew and the Angel   (Rembrandt, 1661)
Before Saint Matthew became a disciple of Jesus, he was a reviled tax collector.

Many today still hate tax season and all that it stands for.  But Pope Francis is not one of them.  He recently blessed a group of compatriots who work for Italy’s version of the IRS.

The pontiff explained that taxation can be “a sign of legality and justice.”  If apportioned fairly (admittedly, a big IF), it is a way of ensuring that the wealthy help the poor.
