NASA plans to launch Solar Probe Plus during the summer of 2018. This will be “the agency’s first mission to fly into the sun’s atmosphere.” The
spacecraft will come within “four million miles of the sun’s surface,” a mighty close glimpse into the “physics of how stars work.”
Solar Probe Plus will be exposed to “heat and radiation unlike any spacecraft in [human] history.” This may provide vital information for the protection of astronauts. It may also help with the forecasting of “space weather events that impact life on Earth.”
