Far Side, for real

Footprints on Moon  (Fair Use)
Gary Larson’s Far Side images are surreal enough.  But they ain't nothing compared to China’s.

While the U. S. was dickering over walls, China was launching a mission to the far side of the moon.  The Chang’e lunar probe landed there this morning, representing “a landmark in human space exploration.”

We'd like to think that this simply means a giant leap forward for all mankind.  However, space can also become the next huge battlefield.  He who controls the moon controls a strategic military base.

Will we make of the moon what we’ve made of Earth?  Will we mine her bounties while undermining our own?  Advanced technology needs advanced ethics in order to ultimately succeed.

Happy Hygge

Hits the spot!   (Photo by 4028mdk09)
“Snug as a bug in a rug” is what we used to call it.  Nowadays, the Danish call it hygge (i.e., “HOO-gah”).

Coming to you from what has been deemed the world’s happiest country, Hygge is the enjoyment of ordinary
comforts:  warm blankets, knitted socks, sweat pants, oatmeal, hot chocolate, candles and books.  Company optional.  Most importantly:  a “blank to-do list.”

Self-care doesn’t need to be arduous.  It can be simple, and simply wonderful.

Don't know what you've got 'til it's gone

Huia Mates   (Painting by JG Keulemans)
Right up there with the $14,450 LEGO gold brick and the $12,970 Winston cocktail is the $10,000 Huia feather.

Just one Huia feather can set an investor back thousands. There are just a few Huia feathers left in the entire world, but not one single Huia.

And why?  Because humans have not only avidly hunted these birds, but have also destroyed their habitat (the primary forests of New Zealand).

Now that Huias are extinct, humans are craving the little that’s left behind.  Don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone…
