Yikes, Spikes!

Possible Representation of an Ankylosaur   (Public Domain)
Talk about a suit of armor!  Medieval knights ain’t got nothing over Spicomellus afer, whose name aptly means “collar of spikes, of Africa.”

Spicomellus afer hung out in what is now Morocco a mere 168 million years ago.  He (she?) was an ankylosaur, meaning a dinosaur with quite a few bony plates.

What’s so unusual about this particular ankylosaur is that its spikes were actually attached to its ribs.  This is a first as far as ankylosaur discoveries go!
