Fur-ternity Leave

The term “extended family” has long referred to intergenerational households. It now also includes pets.

If pets are considered “family,” then why shouldn’t family-leave policies include their needs? This is the thinking of a digital-marketing company in Minneapolis named Nina Hale, which allows “employees with new pets to work from home.”

Employees can then take an active role in potty-training their “fur babies.” After just a couple of weeks, an employee may then be ready to resume his or her former office schedule.

John McCain: A man of prayer

Ever wonder how John McCain was able to endure life as a prisoner of war in Vietnam?

According to biographer Stephen Mansfield, “Prayer was the most important thing for him when he was a POW.” McCain continued to advocate prayer during times of “national crisis,” but was otherwise cautious about public displays of faith. He did not want sacred matters to become political ploys.

McCain's religious roots went way back. His “great-grandfather was an Episcopal minister,” and McCain himself “attended Episcopal day and boarding schools. All this served him well at “Hanoi Hilton,” where McCain was allowed to preach during inmate-held services. His cellmate later reported that McCain recalled the Episcopal liturgy “word for word.”

While in captivity, McCain prayed more fervently than he ever had as a free man. At a POW Christmas hymn sing, he recited biblical accounts of Jesus’ birth. Years afterward, McCain stated that this service was “more sacred” to him than any other, before or since.

Hunger Stones Exposed

When rivers get dangerously high, flooding occurs. But when rivers get dangerously low, hunger occurs.

Due to this summer’s extreme drought in Central Europe, “hunger stones” are appearing within the Elbe River. These boulders, which are generally immersed in water, signal hard times ahead.

One of them, considered to be “the oldest hydrological landmark in Central Europe,” has an ominous inscription which reads: When you see me, cry. This chiseled warning is currently quite visible.
