One-hundred-upmanship

If you’re going to practice one-upmanship, might as well do it on a generously large scale.

Thus figured someone named “Leo” back in 2007, upon plunking 31 hundred-dollar bills into an Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania Salvation Army kettle. 

The volunteer manning this kettle found a note alongside that $31,000 gift.  It read:  I want you to be known as the person who collected the largest donation…

This was in reference to an earlier donation of $30,000.  Lesson learned: A bit of healthy competition can spur folks on to greater heights.
