Many are so preoccupied with who's got the football or basketball that Team Earth is not even on the radar.
Nevertheless, our collective Mother scored what looks to be a big win the other day. The climate accord that was negotiated in Paris seeks to limit “the increase in the global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.”
That’s a mouthful, but a mouthful that will hopefully slow the literally-rising tide of global warming. “Parties”
(read: highly industrialized countries) furthermore pledge to “reach global peaking of greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible… in accordance with best available science…”
Unfortunately, “as soon as possible” is far less specific than setting a particular date. Let’s
hope that the faith with which this pact was made remains steeped in goodness.
