Jeremy Lin: On guard against his own Linmania

Paul the Apostle (by urharec)

Rudyard Kipling poetically defined manhood as meeting “with Triumph and Disaster” and treating those “two imposters” just the same.  During this time of national Linsanity, Jeremy Lin is determined to maintain that delicate Kipling balance.

As an ardent Christian, Lin is much more likely to be quoting Paul than Kipling.  During a testimonial at the River of Life Christian Church, Lin referenced Paul’s letter to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 9:24-25), as well as Paul’s letter to the Phillipians (Phillipians 3:14).  Lin repeatedly stressed that his basketball success was largely due to factors beyond his own control (his height, his competitive nature, inspiring coaches and pastors, supportive brothers, and even certain rejections and injuries that led him down fortuitous pathways).

Wise beyond his 23 years, Lin already realizes the truth of Paul’s message:  If happiness is built upon the temporary things of this world (such as stats and audience expectations), then it will fluctuate
as they do.  Therefore, happiness is best found in the “eternal fellowship” that God offers. Lin strives to submit his will, desires and dreams to Christ.  He intends to do his best on the court and leave the rest to God.

This, of course, is easier said than done.  Lin admits that he initially played for stats, contracts, and his own glory.  The Christian Post quotes him as saying:  “I realize I had to learn…  to stop chasing the perishable prizes of this earth…  and give my best effort unto God and trust Him with the results.”   After a recent winning game against the Lakers (“with a career-high 38 points, seven assists and four rebounds”), Lin gave credit where he felt credit was most due.  After the game, he stated:  I just give all the praise to God.
