Repetitive words can sometimes spawn magical outcomes.  One popular stereotype includes a cloaked being waving a wand while vigorously chanting “Abracadabra!”

Yet ordinary words can also seem quite magical.  You might recall Rodney Dangerfield’s repeated use of the line “I don’t get no respect!”  This comedic chant helped propel him to fame and fortune. When jocular Joan Rivers leaned toward many a TV guest saying “Let’s talk,” the effect was equally potent.

So when Donny Osmond attributed the success of his 48-year marriage to just two magical words, people’s ears perked right up.  What could these these possibly be?  Something profoundly lovey-dovey?  Something awesomely appreciative?  Donny, do tell!

And Donny did tell.  With tongue in cheek (rather than in check), Osmond stated that his two marital words were “Yes ma’am!”  This choice might have gotten him snarky laughs within certain circles, but the two-word phrase “Thank you” could have evoked a lot more magic.
