Face recognition software: Does God have Googly eyes?

(By Solipsist)

Barney Google might have been “the most important man this country ever knew,” but his goo-goo-googly eyes had nothing on Google’s.

Google-developed, face-recognition technology has now made it possible for pretty much anyone and their brother-in-law to invade what you thought was your privacy.  In an article titled Your face – and the Web – can tell everything about you, Bob Sullivan reports that “such technology is so creepy” that it was originally withheld by Google.  Sullivan envisions a scenario in which someone goes into a bar and snaps a few pictures of folks across the room.  Afterwards, with a little help from “off-the-shelf facial recognition software and simple Internet data mining techniques,” these bar patrons’ addresses, likes and dislikes, and possibly even their social security numbers are up for grabs. All this because faces have become the new fingerprints.

Think you can just go ahead and delete every last photo on Facebook, family blogs, and the like?  Think again.  The shelf life of an Internet photo is pretty much forever – as in eternity - as in God.

Speaking of Whom...

Msgr. Charles Pope (in a post titled The Problem of Privacy: God is Watching… And So Are Many Others!) points out that – whether we’re talking full-body scanners at airports, hard drives of digital copiers, or Internet-browser cookies – these technological devices have nothing on the All-Seeing Eye of God (as depicted on the once All-Powerful American Dollar).  Pope reminds us that God “sees everything” – and, therefore, “absolute privacy is an illusion.”

Which can be good news, as far as Pope is concerned…  He recommends “practicing the presence of God” when tempted to log onto a pornography site, or a supposedly-anonymous dating site.  Although some personal privacy can be beneficial, Pope asserts that “the Lord intends for us to live in community where we are accountable to others.”
