Finland: Hot business tips

In much of the world, business expands beyond office walls. Whether on the golf course or at the bar, deals are made in all sorts of places.

Finland, however, has reversed this trend. Rather than transporting employees to exotic settings, large Finnish companies are now housing saunas within their own buildings.

The Christian Science Monitor reports that the sauna is Finland’s “secret weapon behind much of their diplomatic and business successes.” It is said to “enhance creativity and encourage more open dialogue.”

It certainly encourages more open pores. Talk about earning a living by the sweat of your brow!

France: Right to Disconnect

Many of us are leashed to our smartphones day and night. Long after standard office hours, we are still fielding work-related e-mails.

Not so much in France.

The French “pride themselves on maintaining more of a distinction between work life and personal life.” They recently passed a law which allows workers the right to ignore

business e-mails that arrive after hours. This is formally known as the “right to disconnect.”

This law unfortunately only applies to companies with more than 50 employees. Sole proprietors might therefore display signs such as this: Why work for someone else 8 hours per day when you can work for yourself 24/7?

'So much wasted time'

David Cassidy’s last words could apply to any one of us. Although we attend funerals and read obituaries, our own demise seems somewhat unreal.

We need not wait until such final moments to realize how precious life is. We could begin right now, just as Cassidy’s daughter Katie intends to.

Upon hearing her father say, "So much wasted time” shortly before he died, Katie vowed to “share gratitude” with those she loves “as to never waste another minute.”

We can do the same.
