Kaepernick: Taking a stand by sitting

Those who honor what the national anthem stands for might also wish to honor those who purposefully sit it out.

Colin Kaepernick, QB for the 49ers, recently remained seated during the anthem prelude to a preseason game.  When asked about this decision, he later explained:  I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color.

In an official statement, the 49ers defended Kaepernick’s right to his stance.  Calling it  Kaepernick's “freedom of expression,” this statement affirmed “the right of the individual to choose to participate, or not…”

This “sit-in” reflects Kaepernick’s ongoing social activism.  Sporting News reports that he has also “been outspoken on his Twitter account about racial issues in the U.S.”
